Cantaloupe is probably the most popular member of the melon family. This orange-hued, lush and sweet fruit is in season from June to August, although it can be bought in supermarkets throughout the year.
Just like papaya, carrots and similar-colored fruits and veggies, cantaloupe is rich in beta carotene which, once absorbed by the body, is converted into vitamin A. This in turn promotes speedy tissue growth and repair, builds and strong immune system and is good for your vision. Cantaloupe is also an excellent source of vitamin C, vitamin B6, vitamin B3, potassium, folic acid and it is rich in dietary fibers.
Interestingly enough, the vitamin A content of cantaloupe is found to be particularly beneficial for smokers or second-hand smokers since it promotes lung health. Those who have vitamin A deficiency are more prone to lung disease and emphysema, and including a healthy dose of vitamin A-rich foods is one solution to avoid them. Due to its numerous health benefits, cantaloupe should always be part of your weekly grocery items list.
