Millet Is Not Just Bird Food
A lot of people have this misconception that millet is something which is only meant as bird food. Actually, the history of this grain can be traced back to the time of the Bible when it was mentioned as a ‘treasured crop’, and millet was used in ancient times as a main ingredient for bread and as cereal grain.
Fat-Fighting Foods Series: Dairy
We are onto our fourth day in the fat-fighting foods series wherein foods that help get rid of the excess fat in your diet are featured. Among the many food items that we have identified so far, this one is my favorite: dairy.
Soy Milk, A Healthy Alternative
When you go to the grocery store, you are faced with more than a few choices when it comes to the kinds of milk that you can buy. There’s fresh, whole, skimmed, non-fat, soy and flavored milk. If you haven’t tried it yet, soy milk is one healthy dairy alternative that you can try.
Fruits Rich in Antioxidants: Papaya
Papaya is the fourth entry in our ‘superfruits‘ series – which are rich in antioxidants. These luscious, exotic and delicious fruits are a great substitute for watermelon – I personally prefer the sweet taste of ripe papayas than the watery texture of watermelon.
It’s All In The Legume Family
Wellness – and staying fit and healthy is all the craze these days. If you want to join in, one way for you to do so is by welcoming members of the ‘legume family’ into your kitchen. Legumes are basically plants which have seed pods that split in two. Examples of the legumes that we eat include peas, beans, soybeans, peanuts and lentils.
Black Currants Offer Tough-to-Beat Health Benefits
Popular in New Zealand, black currants have a wide array of health benefits which can easily compete with those offered by blueberries. A ‘health food’ in the real sense, black currants have experienced a decline in popularity when it was banned in the US during the early 1900’s due to its supposed threat to the lumber industry. Just five years ago, that ban was lifted and Americans are now able to enjoy the teeming health benefits of black currants.

The Ultra-Unique And Uber-Healthy Bok Choy
You would often see Bok Choy or Chinese cabbage incorporated in Asian dishes. This Chinese version of the cabbage that we know here in the US has an entirely different appearance and a unique flavor. Bokchoy has white, elongated stalks and ruffled green or blue-green leaves. This veggie has a light, almost bitter flavor which tastes great when used in salads and soups.
Goodbye, Prunes – Hello, Dried Plums!
Inexplicably enough, the word prunes always had a negative connotation, referring to wrinkly old skin or the fruit which is used in nursing homes to cure stomach disorders. This is the reason why there has been a revived marketing campaign to renew this fruit’s image. A brand which went into this path is California Dried Plums.
Venison’s Nutrition
Venison or deer meat may not often be part of your menu for dinner, but it is something that you need to consider serving frequently because of its great nutritional value. Venison roast, grilled venison steaks, barbecued venison chops or creamed venison are tasty treats whether you are having dinner in a fine restaurant or having a special home cooked meal.
